Travel Update 01/09/2021
Why do we have this traffic light system? It’s to help the government accurately evaluate the risk from different countries and allows the public to understand what the requirements are when travelling. The traffic light system is being reviewed every three weeks. The next review will be Wednesday 25th August, so any changes will come into effect from 4am, August 29th.
When travelling, there are different actions to take before you travel abroad, before you return to the UK, and after you return to the UK. Always check foreign travel advice as some countries may not permit people from the UK from entering. Some countries will need proof of a double vaccination or a negative PCR test and proof of quarantine once you arrive.
Traffic light system rules broken down
Red list – You should not travel to these countries. You will only be allowed to return to the UK from an area on the red list if you are a British or Irish national or have residence rights in the UK. These rules must be followed even if you are vaccinated. Before you arrive, you must take a COVID-19 test, book a quarantine hotel, and complete a passenger locator form.
Amber list – With the amber list, before you travel back to the UK, you must take a COVID-19 test in the 3 days before you travel and complete a passenger locator form. These must be completed whether you are fully vaccinated or not. Once you arrive in the UK, you must take another COVID-19 test on or before day 2. If you are not fully vaccinated, you must quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days.
Green list – Quarantine is not necessary from a country on the green list, unless a COVID-19 test comes back positive. Take a test in the 3 days before you arrive back in the UK, complete a passenger locator form and on or before the second day, take another test. Children aged 4 and under do not need to take a test.
Notable Green List countries/territories (as of 8th August):Austria
* At risk of moving from green to amber
Full information can be found on the UK government website. Always check the foreign travel advice when you plan to go abroad, as the fines can be up to £10,000 when quarantine rules are not followed.

What is the difference between a GREEN ZONE and the GREEN WATCHLIST? Countries in the green zone are countries you can visit right now. The green watchlist are countries that are at risk from moving from green to amber, meaning it is recommended against travel and quarantine will be mandatory upon arrival back in the United Kingdom.
Although you can travel to these countries from the UK, they may have their own rules about quarantine, so please check their guidelines before you travel. For example, Iceland requires you to have both doses of the vaccine to travel. More countries will become available to travel to over the next few months, so be sure to keep up to date on official and government websites.
